Hood has decent weather, but Killeen is kinda shady and it's an hour to Austin. Carson and Lewis are both in decent areas right outside major cities, but the weather sucks. When I "grade" a base, I look at the immediate area/ how far is the nearest major city and the climate. Most bases are very similar if not the same, and almost all of them have a really shitty town right outside the gate. In the last 2 years, I've seen every division/corps size post except for Bliss, Drum, and Stewart. Your first contract, you will have pretty much no input on where you go, and even if you did, chances are it wouldn't matter that much. I'm also going to suggest that you don't get too hung up on where you might be based. You've still gotta 'embrace the suck' when it comes around, but at least you'll get a better pay check and you'll have fewer people around to mess with you. There are some downsides to Army culture, but I don't think getting a commission will get you away from that. +1k on E4 not being much of an improvement over joining as some form of PVT.Īgain- the career outlook for 19Ks is not good right now, in or out of the Army. He makes a lot of good points here, and I think he did a better job of answering your specific questions than I did. HIGH as fuck but not so much the Afghanistan ,bc very few heavy BCTs have been sent there and the ones that did didn't bring their tanks Imho the worst part about the army is the Culture, I'm sure some one can chime in about this.Īlso ,if you think coming in as a e4 will make things easier you're sadly mistaken My advice to you, is if you're hellbent about joining ,get a commission ,and stay away from enlisted side of the fence. Vehicle Maintenance, and cleaning shit <–––––––– this times 9ġ9Ks have been doing some serious downsizing since the army is trying to lighten things up there are many tankers who cant re up as a tankers and are forced to reclass For a permanent duty station what options are out there ?īenning,Stewart, hood, bliss,Carson,a few posts in Germany ,and Korea HIGH as fuck but not so much in Afghanistan ,bc very few heavy BCTs have been sent there ,and the ones that did didn't bring their tanks How decent are the odds of being deployed as a dismount to Iraq or Afghanistan? I can answer most of your questions since believe or not most combat arms jobs are the SAME despite the hype I'm 19D (and former 13B) in a combined arms battalion ,its a circus of infantry, tankers ,and plt of scouts Advice? Opinions? How decent are the odds of being deployed as a dismount to Iraq or Afghanistan? For a permanent duty station, what options are out there and how do they rate? What's day-to-day life like? How was OSUT (which I understand will now be at Benning rather than Knox)? After how many years of experience do they typically promote from driver/gunner to TC? How are living conditions compared with other parts of the Army?Īny information and advice is appreciated, and thank you! I know we have a few tankers on Arfcom, and wondered about their experiences serving in Armor. I'm a 23 year old college graduate strongly considering enlisting (E4) as a 19K Abrams Crewman.
